HISTORY OF HAKA

A fusion of sporting fraternity and subtle Maori symbolism culminating in the new lifestyle sportswear brand HAKA.

New Zealand Roots

HAKA Apparel launched its rugby-inspired menswear range with a powhiri on the Marae at Auckland Museum attended by All Black greats. Buck Shelford, Frank Bunce, Todd Blackadder, Ian Jones and Alan Whetton, all of whom are stakeholders in the new brand to be sold globally from early next year, modelled in the finale of the catwalk show held in the Museum. The venue of this launch was absolutely inspired.

The Auckland Museum is a haunting beautiful space and even more so with the added beauty of a sung powhiri, and HAKA apparel pulled off a real coup by having their launch there on Wednesday night. It got off to an amazing and moving start with an official welcome or powhiri and a hongi, where guests pressed noses with the hosts.

In November 2006 the first range of Haka men’s clothing was launched in Auckland. Designed as a relaxed casual look for the older guy Haka was supported by five famous All Blacks in their advertising campaign. Todd Blackadder, Frank Bunce, Alan Whetton , Ian Jones and Wayne Shelford were in the initial ambassadors for the brand and in fact stake holders in the project.

The brand is a fusion of sporting fraternity and subtle Maori symbolism. New Zealand is world famous for our prowess on the rugby field, and the Haka is a significant part of the legend. Wherever a Kiwi walks in the world, tales of the Haka are sure to be heard. New lifestyle sportswear brand HAKA – Legendary apparel was launched tonight to a crowd of more than one hundred VIPs, media and rugby greats at the Auckland Museum.

The catch line “Legendary Apparel” was chosen as the five famous players personified the look and style of the range and embraced the variety of garments that were on offer. The launch itself took place at The Auckland Museum and was preceded by a powhiri and traditional Maori welcome and blessing from members of the local tribe the Ngati Whatua.

Invited guests included many past and present rugby legends as well as members of the media and fashion industry for this glittering occasion.
